Other Funding Sources

International Development Exchange
IDEX develops long-term funding relationships with effective organizations, or partners. Instead of one-time grants, IDEX’s commitment is to provide flexible funding in three-year cycles. Their grants often support important areas of work that are either overlooked or neglected by other funders.

The World Conservation Union (IUCN)
With the mission of conserving the integrity and diversity of nature and ensuring that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable, the IUCN small grant program using CARPE fund has the objective to strengthen civil society for sustainable forest conservation in Central Africa. Onaway Trust
Grants to support the heritage of Indigenous Peoples, and to fund projects for the environment and animal welfare. The Onaway Trust is a registered charity that supports Indigenous projects all over the world. For the funding application, click here.

International Fund for Agricultural Development
Provides grants to Indigenous Peoples’ organizations and communities, as well as organizations that work with them, for the purpose of funding projects, innovative approaches, and partnerships that promote the development of Indigenous Peoples and help them fulfill their aspirations. Grants range from US$20,000 to US$50,000. Applicants must meet specific requirements and their proposals should respond to the needs of Indigenous Peoples in any of IFAD’s developing Member States.

United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
The UN System has established some funds that are specifically intended for Indigenous Peoples. Some of these funds are intended to help finance the participation of Indigenous Peoples at UN meetings, while other funds are for small projects. Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues relating to the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People
The Trust Fund for the Second Decade was established to promote, support and implement the objectives of the Decade. The Fund will give priority to projects concerning the main areas of the Second Decade: culture, education, health, human rights, the environment and social and economic development. It is expected that the Fund will mainly be used for small grants projects with a budget for up to US$10,000 covering one year’s expenses. United Nations Democracy Fund
The United Nations Democracy Fund invites civil society organizations to apply for funding for projects to advance and support democracy. Project proposals may be submitted online at this link; UNDEF's window for project proposals is usually open for six weeks a year, from mid- November to end of December. You can find guidelines, FAQs, and lessons learned from previous rounds at their information page.

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) – Climate Change Adaptation Program (CCAP)
Supports Aboriginal and Northern communities, organizations and territories in addressing urgent risks in the North, where the impacts of a changing climate are already visible, and vulnerability of infrastructure is high. For the Funding Applicant Guide and Forms, click here.

AusAID Human Rights Grants Scheme
The Human Rights Grants Scheme provides grant funding to non-government organizations and human rights institutions based or operating in developing countries to promote and protect human rights in direct and tangible ways.

Abya Yala Fund for Indigenous Self-Development in South & Meso-America
Responding to the need for Indigenous Peoples to realize our own community development initiatives,
Indigenous leaders from throughout the Americas gathered in 1994, in Oakland, CA, to create the Abya Yala Fund (AYF). AYF is the first foundation to be founded and run by Indigenous Peoples from Central and South America and Mexico.  E-mail: abyayala@earthlink.net

Seventh Generation Fund for Indian Development
An Indigenous non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and maintaining the uniqueness of Native Peoples throughout the Americas, they offer an integrated program of advocacy, small grants, training, and technical assistance, media experience, and fiscal management. Global Greengrants Fund
Global Greengrants Fund is a public charity that seeds environmental action through small grants. They support change from the ground up by channeling donations to local projects and grassroots campaigns for justice, primarily in the developing world and emerging economies. Kiva Microfunds
A non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty, Kiva leverages the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions in allowing individuals to lend as little as US$25 to help create opportunity around the world.

Crossroads Foundation
Crossroads Foundation is a Hong Kong-based, non-profit organization serving global need. We believe that, in a broken world that sees too much suffering, we should do all we can to link those who are in need with those who can provide help. So we provide an intersection, literally a crossroads, to bring both together.

Databases and Directories

Terra Viva Grants
Provides a database of funding opportunities for grant seekers. It is an interesting online listing of diverse international grant opportunities for agriculture, energy, environment, and natural resources.

The Foundation Center
Provides a Philanthropy News Digest posting current news and opportunities for Grantseekers. The “Request for Proposals” is a weekly digest of all current opportunities for grantseekers which can be organized by subject.

NGO News Africa
Provides an updated list of grant openings for grantseeking NGOs in Africa.

Africa Grantmakers Affinity Group
Dedicated to promoting increased and more effective funding in Africa through building and sharing knowledge, the Affinity Group allows grantseekers to search by country and or thematic focus to find relevant funders.

International Human Rights Funders Group
An association of grantmakers devoted to supporting efforts to achieve the rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the treaties and laws it has generated so that all people may enjoy a truly and fully human existence.

Worldwide Initiatives for Grantmaker Support
